Islam in Aiyepe, Ijebu

Aiyepe, Ijebu is a town in Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria. It came into existence in 1831, about 194 years ago, when six separate communities that had lived in different enclaves for many years decided to come together without losing their individual identities and monarchies. The six founding communities are Orile Aba, Orile Odolowu, Orile Ilakan, Orile Odolubisanwa, Orile Idobiri and Orile Afo. The traditional titles of each community, which are still maintained to this day, are Alaye Aba of Aba-AiyepeIjebu, Olowu of Odolowu-Aiyepe Ijebu, Alakan of Ilakan-AiyepeIjebu, Olubisanwa of Odolubisanwa  -Aiyepe Ijebu, Obiri of Idobiri-Aiyepe Ijebu and Akalako of Afo-Aiyepe Ijebu.

Islam took root in Aiyepe Ijebu from the very beginning of the town’s existence, with each community maintaining its own mosque for the five daily prayers and other Islamic activities. However, following deliberations on the need for a central place of worship for Jumu‘ah (Friday) prayers, the Aba Muslim Community donated their mosque for this purpose. This mosque became the first Aiyepe Central Mosque. Afterward, the Aba Muslim Community built another mosque nearby for their daily prayers. Since Islam was firmly established in Aiyepe Ijebu, the town has been blessed with nine Chief Imams in the following order:

  1. Imam Bukayi
  2. Imam Odugbesan
  3. Imam Aliyu Gbogbe
  4. Imam Junaid Olayiwola Badejo
  5. Imam Mustapha Sangonuga
  6. Imam Jimoh Giwa
  7. Imam Bashiru Adeleye
  8. Imam Shakirudeen Babatunde Ibrahim
  9. Imam Shafihiyu Adebanjo Idowu Awosanya — the present Chief Imam of Aiyepe Ijebu, turbaned on 14th May, 2017.

The Muslim community also established two schools: Ansar-Ud-Deen Primary School, Aiyepe Ijebu and Ansar-Ud-Deen Girls’ High School, which was later renamed Aiyepe Girls’ High School. In January 1973, the Girls’ High School became a mixed institution with the admission of boys and was renamed Aiyepe High School. Over the years, the school metamorphosed into Aiyepe Comprehensive High School, which was eventually taken over by the Ogun State Government of Nigeria. The central working committee of Aiyepe Muslim Community in 2014 took over Ansar-Ud-Deen Nursery School which was established in 1996 and renamed it Aiyepe Muslim Basic School while in the year 2016 a new secondary school – Aiyepe Muslim College, Aiyepe Ijebu was established and privately managed.
